Wednesday, July 26, 9:30 P.M.:-- Working over a pencil sketch, I started the underpainting with burnt umber. (Click on pictures to see larger versions.)

Dog painting in progress10:30 P.M.--I began adding more color to the dog, blocking him in and then I started putting in the background colors.

Dog painting in progress12:48 P.M.-- I like to work back and forth between the background and subject for color and contrast effects. I decided on a background of a garden with flowers.
Dog Portrait, live web cam artisitThursday, July 27, 9:00 p.m.:--Tonight I did some refining on the dog after putting some linseed oil over the dry canvas to help with blending. The oil causes a lot of reflection in the photograph so I had to adjust this digital picture on the computer to get rid of reflective noise.
Web cam artist, dog portrait Portrait Completed Friday: 1:00 p.m.: Left is the final portrait. I moved the horizon back because the size of the dog is very small and in proportion to the background he appeared to be a giant.
In the background, I made more grass around his feet and suggestions of grass further into the background. I zoomed in on the photo in Paint Shop Pro to see it up close. Even though the background may not be as interesting now, does not make her appear to be oversized. Sometimes simplicity is a better choice when doing portrait backgrounds. . I hope my client likes it.

The left ear, the right eye, and some fine hairs on the chest, to name a few. . Click on this picture to the left for a look at the last final. It is also a clearer picture of the final painting.
